By the looks of it, Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani will remain at Serie A club Napoli for at least one more season. Fresh off a dream debut season that saw the former Palermo star bag 33 goals in 47 appearances for the Partenopei, Cavani has been reportedly linked to the biggest clubs in Europe.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has recently claimed that he would not sell the talisman for €100 million in the midst of speculation linking the Uruguayan to Manchester United.

“They would have to revoke my president’s licence if I sold Cavani for less than €100m. He would have to be annoyed as he is not worth that little. Plus he is worth much more than what those in England have been writing,” De Laurentiis told Radio Marte.

Cavani is a superb talent, but €100m is an outrageous fee for such a player. There are only two players in the world that are worth €100m plus, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. No disrespect to Cavani, but he does not even come close to the quality of Ronaldo and Messi. After all, Luis Suarez – who is undoubtedly the better Uruguayan forward – was sold to Liverpool for just €25m.

Cavani’s agent Claudio Anelucci has come forward to seemingly put to rest the rumour that Cavani may be joining Manchester United.

“This is the time of year when it is normal to hear talk of transfers to big clubs for astronomical fees, the majority of the time there is nothing to them, as is the case with regards to a possible move to Manchester United for Edinson,” Anelucci told Radio Sportiva.

Aside from being linked to Manchester United, Cavani has been rumoured to be a target of Roberto Mancini and Manchester City. Barring a huge bid for the player, which seems rather doubtful at the moment, the Uruguayan hitman is unlikely moving away from the Serie A this summer.

That being said, Napoli is set to enter the UEFA Champions League next season, a perfect stage for Cavani to live up to club president Aurelio De Laurentiis’ €100m price-tag. If Cavani can perform versus the top clubs throughout Europe, he may well indeed increase his value, albeit €100m still seems rather ridiculous. The 24 year old striker has a bright future, but
Napoli seem to be justifiably holding onto their most prized asset for another season.
