Why Sergio Aguero Might Not Be The Answer For Juventus

Ever since the Juventus Board of Directors approved the cash injection last month, sporting director Giuseppe Marotta has found himself with approximately €60 million to improve the current squad and Marotta has repeatedly said that the majority of the transfer kitty will be spent on one world class player.

As a result, Juventus have been linked with almost every single player in Europe, but lately the attention has been focused on Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero. Without doubt, Aguero is one of the most talented young strikers in today’s game, however it may be a luxury Juventus may not need at the moment.

Some claim that it is not like Juventus to shell out the big bucks for one player. That though couldn’t be further from the truth. If we look at the last two decades, Juventus have broken the world transfer record twice when signing Roberto Baggio in 1990 and Gianluca Vialli in 1992. Ginalugi Buffon and Pavel Nedved are still in the top 15 most expensive transfers of all time.

The aforementioned names enjoyed enormous success in the Bianconeri colors, also picking up two Golden Balls on the way. However these transfers at the time were considered the last missing pieces of the puzzle and at the moment Juventus have a lot of pieces missing from their puzzle.

Aguero is no doubt a class above the strikers already available at Juve, it would be a shame to see him suffer because he doesn’t get the right support from his teammates. Something doesn’t sound right about a “Pepe-Aguero” partnership down the left wing. And to make things worse, the expectations to replicate the success of other Juventus big name transfers could be too much to bear for the 23 year old.

Marotta has already done some good work by finally bringing in some capable fullbacks, a problem Juve have suffered from for 5 years. A concern is the lack of attention given to the position of left winger, not too long ago Juve were constantly linked with Dzsudzsak, Bastos, Nani and even Ribery.

If Juve do sign Aguero, it remains to be seen what caliber of player Marotta will be able to afford from the remaining transfer budget. If the purpose is to bring in a big name for the inaugural season of the new Juventus stadium, then it may be wiser to use the 15 million Euros saved on signing a star player like Giuseppe Rossi or Kareem Benzeama and spending it on a star left winger as well.
