Italian Football Is Not In Crisis – Michel Platini

Uefa president Michel Platini does not believe Italian football is going through a crisis, despite the recent players’ strike in Serie A and the relative lack of success in the Champions League, Inter’s 2010 victory being the only recent exception.

“I don’t believe [Italy are in crisis], as president of Uefa,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport. “In the period when I won two European titles with Juventus times were better, but it’s not in a crisis because last year Inter won the Champions League.

“Football is made of cycles and building a new team is not easy, it’s easier to destroy it,” the 56-year-old added. “Eventually though, the best teams always succeed, such as Real Madrid, Benfica, Inter, Milan, and Manchester United.”

On which Italian clubs he sees doing well in Europe the coming season, he said: “Milan, Inter, and Napoli are all definitely capable of doing well in the Champions League this season.”

Another interesting test for Calcio will come when last season’s champions Milan face the seemingly unstoppable Barcelona in the group stages.
