Yesterday Juventus president Andrea Agnelli announced that legendary captain Alessandro Del Piero will leave the club at the end of the season after nearly 20 years.
Whether this means he will quit football altogether or leave for another club, remains to be seen.
Many football lovers were disappointed by this announcement, including former Milan and Italy coach Cesare Maldini.
“I was surprised,” he told news agency Ansa, “now there’s only [Francesco] Totti left as a symbolic player of a big team and I hope he continues for a long time. It was strange that Agnelli made this announcement, however, especially because it’s the start of the season.
“Alessandro should have been there with the president and said that the decision was taken together with full agreement. Now I’m curious what Del Piero is going to say.”
Del Piero joined Juventus from Padova in 1993, and has played with the Bianconeri ever since. He has scored 205 league goals for the Turin-based club.
