Roma coach Luis Enrique has a new problem this morning and it’s not one that the Roma supporters were expecting.

Giallorossi legend has admitted that he is considering leaving the club that he has served for nearly 20 years due to criticism from some Roma tifosi and a lack of opportunities under the Spaniard.

This season has, so far, been one to forget for the 35 year-old captain.  He has yet to score in Serie A and has spent far too much time sitting on the bench or in the treatment room.

It is clear that Luis Enrique has not gone along with the whole ‘Totti is Roma’ theory and has used him sparingly preferring instead to blood his new signings like Pablo Osvaldo, Bojan Krkic & Erik Lamela.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia before the club’s Christmas dinner, Totti advised “I’ve thought of leaving Roma, especially recently. I’m sorry to hear some of the statements made by Roma supporters. If they have a problem with me being inRome, I will continue to think about leaving.”

I don’t really believe for a moment that he will carry out his threat to leave the club.  I think Totti is using this as an opportunity to get the under-fire Enrique to play him more.  By threatening to walk away from the club he is in effect demanding that the coach play him or face the consequences.

Whilst the future of Roma is not dependant on Er Pupone he is still a very powerful figure within the club who has spent the last 20 years or so weaving himself into the fabric of the club.  Too walk away from a club when the coaches position is currently very precarious seems nonsensical.

I would wager that Enrique will leave Roma before Totti and that these comments are designed merely to increase the pressure on Enrique to give club’s talisman more playing time.

Totti, like all egomaniac’s, do not take kindly to even the mildest criticism and for a section of the crowd to get on his back will not be taken lying down.

Totti vs coach battles only ever end up one way and even with il Capitano’s advancing years there will be only one winner.

Result: Expect Totti to be in the starting line-up against Napoli on Sunday.

English supporter living in Nottingham, England. I also follow the fortunes of local side Nottingham Forest and due to the locality spend far more time there than Rome. However, Calcio and Roma inparticular are big passions of mine and I enjoy writing articles about them. Fell in love with Italian football, like so many, in the early nineties thanks to the wonderful Robert Baggio. Still the best player I’ve ever seen. However, Roma are my team after a visit to the city a few years ago. I have my own blog for English speaking/readers called ASRomaUK at http://asromauk.blogspot.com for all of you fellow Giallorossi tifosi.
