Francesco Totti may well make a return to the Azzurri after coach Cesare Prandelli admitted that any player in good shape, regardless of age is a potential candidate for the Euro 2012 squad.
The Roma legend last played for his country just after Italy’s triumphant World Cup campaign in Germany in 2006.
“At the end of the season, we will assess the players’ physical condition,” Prandelli told Tg1.
“We started the season with a project: if there were players with great personality and in good shape, they would be taken into consideration.”
Totti’s form has taken off in recent weeks after a disappointing first half the season and he has netted four goals in his last three appearances.
Prandelli may have a battle on his hands to persuade Er Pupone to come out international retirement as former Azzurri coach Roberto Donadoni tried to do the same thing in Euro 2008 with any success.
When asked specifically about the prospect of recalling the 35 year-old Prandelli remarked “Why not? If he’s in good shape…”
Striking options might be in short supply for this summer as Antonio Cassano and Giuseppe Rossi will both be struggling to recover from surgery in time to get the required match fitness under their belts before heading to Poland & Ukraine for the tournament.
