spent 24 years at the Rossoneri, winning some of the most respected silverware in the business. He worked alongside the likes of Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta, and later on in his career saw him playing alongside Alessandro Nesta. All were widely considered some of the most formidable defensive partnerships not just in Italy but in Europe.

Then lets not forget some of the coaches that got some of that silverware at the club, key figures such as Arrigo Sacchi, Fabio Capello and Carlo Ancelotti, who Influenced Maldini’s playing career.
Nicknamed “il Capitano” because of his ability to influence individuals and how he could encourage a team, not just at club level but nationally. He was quoted as “a leader amongst leaders.” which some footballers who worked with him have stated.

Maldini retired from the game in 2009 and was expecting to be handed a role at the club. Well that’s what Paolo Maldini and the Rossoneri fans thought.

The latest news coming from Italy suggests that Maldini has been rejected twice for a role at the club, leaving Maldini asking the question “Why?”

Maldini has stated “Milan are in my heart and I want to repay the club, I feel a strong and unconditional love for the Rossoneri jersey.” So why is Maldini still not working at the club?

When Leonardo took charge he wanted Maldini to work alongside him whilst in his first season in charge of the team, however this never happened due to Leonardo falling out with club owner Berlusconi. While Allegri wanted Maldini as the middleman for the squad and the club, but this has yet to happen.

In my opinion Maldini can still be influential at the club, he would be able to help in some of its vital areas, areas that Milan have struggled in this season. You only have to look at this transfer window to see that already another left sided player has joined the squad because its a weak part of the team. With players failing to imitate Maldini’s abilities on the left, Milan are now trying to solve that problem by throwing money at the position.

This season I have seen some awkward moments where the opposition have gone down the left flank and the likes of Antonini have struggled to clear the ball and even get forward to support the team.

I know it wasn’t a lot of money but why use transfer funds when Maldini is available and wants to work at the club. His knowledge of the position could easily get the likes of Taiwo, Antonini, Zambrotta and Emanuelson performing as they could work alongside him in training.

Its not just them he would influence, the whole team would be boosted to have an icon working with them, he would come into the team with the same respect that he left with, and this can only bring positive vibes to the team, the younger squad members, staff and the fans. He would be a great ambassador for the club, offering feedback to the team and fans, plus new ideas for the club to move forward.

have took this step by employing Nedved and already they have seen some big changes, Milan need to take these steps if they wish to continue competing for the top spot in Italy and Europe. Maldini has stated he would be a traitor if he went to another club, but you have to ask the question, how long will he wait?

Milan have always had a strong group of staff behind the managers, some who have been essential to the clubs success. However football changes and its important to keep up with these changes. Berlusconi and Galliani need to start thinking what is best for the club and its future, especially if a person can influence the club and lead it.
