Daniele De Rossi, Roma’s midfield general, has spoken for the first time about why, after months of protracted discussions, he finally decided to commit his future to Roma.
The 28 year-old has been linked with several of Europe’s top clubs in the past six months mainly due to his refusal to sign a new deal at the club until the past few days.
De Rossi’s love of his boyhood club, and the only club side he has ever represented, was the chief reason behind his decision to stay rather than seek further riches in the Premier League or La Liga.
“What inspired me is the passion for this team and these people. I realised that I had what I need here,” De Rossi advised Tuttosport.
“The path to signing the contract was a little long, and I had some hestation. I’ve heard a thousand people say that it was the end, but I always knew I would have chosen this.”
De Rossi’s ambitions match that of the new club owners as they try to build a new dynasty at Roma and take the club to the heights of European football, a summit never previously reached.
“I hope that we can return to fight for the Scudetto, even the Champions Leauge in the next five years.”
De Rossi also revealed that club captain Francesco Totti was a key inspiration staying at the giallorossi as he wishes to build a legacy similar to that of the legendary Er Pupone.
“I was never pressured by Totti but his image, of a man who was happy in Rome and who will finish his career here, was crucial.
“It will be impossible to reach his record. He’s loved by all, and is decisive on the pitch. I have great desire to show this as well.”
Although the full financial details of his new contract are not know it is estimated that he will earn somewhere between €8-10 million per year.
In an age of increasing mercenary footballers ASRomaUK is delighted that De Rossi has committed his future to the club and when he takes over the armband from Totti we can look forward to him leading the team with the same passion and determination that makes him so invaluable to the side.
