suffered their second defeat in three games after a disappointing performance in the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Monday night.

A penalty from in-form was enough to separate the sides but Roma will feel disappointed with the result as they had the lions share of possession but failed to take their chances.

The Bianconeri produced a solid defensive display, equivalent to their Juventus performance of a week or so ago, as Roma repeatedly failed to break them down.

The opening exchanges were split evenly as Giallorossi captain Francesco Totti should have done better with a free-kick from just outside the area that struck the defensive wall and Genoa loanee Mattia Destro came close to opening the scoring for with a strike from distance that whistled past Maarten Stekelenburg’s crossbar.

The chances continued to be created by both sides and striker Emanuele Calaio should have given the Robur a lead after a great through ball from midfielder Franco Brienza found Calaio inside the area with only Stekelenburg to beat.  Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Roma, he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Coach Giuseppe Sannino would continue to be frustrated by the poor finishing throughout the game, but not as much as his opposite number Luis Enrique.

Lamela forced Siena keeper Gianluca Pegolo into action with a well taken freekick that the 30 year-old did well to divert for a corner.

Despite Roma enjoying more of the ball Siena created the better chances and will have felt more disappointed going in scoreless at half-time.

The second half begun much the same as the first with chances being created but ultimately squandered.  Destro shot straight at Stekelenburg when it would have been easier to put it either side of the Dutchman.

A break however, was soon forthcoming as Roma defender Simon Kjaer was adjudged to have felled Destro in the area and the ref duly awarded a spot-kick.

Despite his earlier misses being the man in-form, Emanule Calaio, dispatched the penalty to the keeper’s left to give him his 10th goal of the season.

Sensing an upset was on the cards Enrique brought on Pablo Osvaldo for his return after a month and a half lay-off with a thigh injury, along with Bojan Krkic to add a bit of bite up front.  Fabio Simplicio and Francesco Totti made way for their teammates.

The substitutions had little impact overall as Roma failed to break through and create any further clear cut chances.  Sannino’s mean held firm and in the end deserved their victory.

Following the game Luis Enrique expressed his frustration with the below-par performance stating “This was not our night, we made too many mistakes. Many of our players were below their usual level”

“We always tried to attack, but if we do not control the ball it leaves us in trouble. It is clear we are still far from having the consistency that we are looking for”

Graciously he did reserve some praise for Siena.

“Siena were great in defence and they closed down very well.” added the Spaniard.

The victory for Siena moves them out of the relegation zone whilst Roma remain in sixth but lose vital ground on their rivals for a Champions League place.

English AS Roma supporter living in Nottingham, England. I also follow the fortunes of local side Nottingham Forest and due to the locality spend far more time there than Rome. However, Calcio and Roma inparticular are big passions of mine and I enjoy writing articles about them. Fell in love with Italian football, like so many, in the early nineties thanks to the wonderful Robert Baggio. Still the best player I’ve ever seen. However, Roma are my team after a visit to the city a few years ago. I have my own blog for English speaking/readers called ASRomaUK at http://asromauk.blogspot.com for all of you fellow Giallorossi tifosi.
