On Wednesday Didier Deschamps will have his first encounter with Italian football since leaving Juventus after leading them back to Serie A following their relegation. The Olympique Marseille coach will face Inter at the Stade Velodrome in the first leg of the last 16 Champions League clash.
“Who will win the Champions League? Barcelona and Real Madrid have something extra,” he said to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Milan, Inter and Bayern Munich are not far off.
“We’ll face a team that isn’t the same as the one in the league. They will be concentrated on the Champions League and nine players out of eleven were in the final that they won less than two years ago. They want to win it again.”
On his own team, the coach said: “Our objective was qualifying for the eighth finals, and now the quarter-finals. But Inter remain the favourites. With strikers like [Giampaolo] Pazzini, [Diego] Milito, Diego [Forlan]… The problem with this team is their individual quality.”
Asked if he would even join Inter despite his past at Juventus as both player and coach, Deschamps said: “[Fabio] Capello said he would never go to Juventus, but we saw what happened. The coach is a professional, he works everywhere. I’ve improved, like a wine, I’m more experienced and less impulsive. I’m proud of what I’m doing in Marseille, I’ve been here three years, which for this club is a record.”
