Roma’s sporting director, and club mouthpiece, Walter Sabatini has said that he would give Luis Enrique full marks for the work he has done so far since taking over the reigns last summer.
Enrique’s side are currently fifth in the table and are generally in good form and looking to get into the top three to secure the club’s aim for the season of qualifying for the Champions League.
“Third place? You must create the premise. Every Sunday we have to fight to reach that target.” advised the 56 year-old.
“To not fight would be ungenerous to ourselves and to our fans. Starting from next Sunday, we will start a little League that we have to play in.”
In speaking about the job that the Spaniard has done since his summer arrival the director was full of praise.
“A vote for Enrique? The maximum possible, 10 then. He is a beast, very good. He is a great conductor, a tireless worker with an internal fire, a spark that is perpetually lit.
“He wants to implement a courageous football, although sometimes it has not paid off. But, this is the way we want to pursue, even though we know we’re going to encounter some difficulties.
“So far we have only constructed conditions to encourage it to grow.”
Darren’s View
The jury is out on whether any Roma tifosi would give Enrique full marks considering the club have suffered eight league defeats so far this season, but the early season clamour to get rid of the rookie coach has dissipated in the last few months, thanks mainly to an unbeaten seven game stretch that saw Roma rise into the top six and some impressive victories, most notably the 4-0 hammering of Inter at the beginning of this month.
Whichever coach came in it was also going to be a big ask to get the club into the top three given the change of ownership and all of the potential headaches that that usually brings.
For my part I think Enrique has done a good job and has ridden out the early difficult days when he could not get his players to play the kind of football that he envisioned when he joined.
Although the hard work is far from over he does seem a lot more settled and confident in his philosophy and approach and how this has translated down to the players. These past six months have been a steep learning curve for him and he is starting to reap some of the benefits of his belief in his system and way of playing.
Overall then, if we are going to be giving out marks at this time of the season, taking everything into consideration, I would Enrique an 8/10.
Plenty of room for improvement and also increase in his knowledge of the Italian game, but that said I think he is doing an excellent job and I can see the team going from strength to strength under his leadership.
The future is bright. The future is………………………..Giallorossi.
