Saturday 18th February
Juve Stabia 2 – 1 Reggina
Reggina’s hopes of claiming a play-off place were dented during Saturday’s late kick off, as goals from Adriano Mezavilla and Marco Sau gave Juve Stabia a deserved 2-1 victory.
The hosts dominated the early proceedings, and went agonisingly close to taking the lead; Tomas Danilevicius just failing to connect with Sau’s teasing ball across the face of the Reggina goal.
Sau then forced an impressive save from Reggina keeper Giovanni Zandrini from point blank range, who also had to be alert to push over Stefano Dicuonzo’s speculative strike from the left flank.
The home side took a deserved lead on the half hour mark, when Sau’s mishit effort from the edge of the box bounced fortuitously into the path of an unmarked Mezavilla, who nodded the ball home from close range.
The lead was doubled just over five minutes after the restart, when Antonio Zito squared the ball into the path of Sau on the edge of the box, who rifled a shot into the roof of the net for his 13th goal of an impressive season.
Reggina reduced the arrears in the 66th minute, when Gianluca Fredi nodded home Nicolas Benito Viola’s looping cross into the box from close range.
Tomas Danilevicius saw an effort cleared off the line by Reggina’s Matteo D’Alessandro in the closing stages, as the home side held on for a thoroughly deserved point, and damaged the Calabrian’s chances of a return to Serie A.
Monday 20th February
Torino 2 – 1 Sampdoria
Riccardo Meggiorini’s late winner took Torino back to the top of Serie B with a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria.
Nicola Pozzi went close to an opener for the visitors following some neat footwork on the edge of the area, but his weak finish was easily smothered by Torino keeper Francesco Benussi.
However, the Granata took the lead in the 20th minute, when Alen Stevanovic’s ball into the box was met by Mirco Antenucci. Daniele Gastaldello managed to block the forward’s first attempt, but he was helpless to prevent Antenucci powering home the rebound from close range.
The lead should have been before the break, but Rolando Bianchi’s powerful free header from the edge of the six-yard box was tipped onto the bar by Sampdoria keeper Sergio Romero.
The Blucerchiati were level with just over 20 minutes remaining, as second half substitute Juan Antonio picked up the ball on the edge of the Torino box, skipped past the challenge of Valerio Di Cesare, and steered the ball into the bottom corner.
However, Meggiorini had the final say four minutes from time, as he powered home Antenucci’s teasing ball across the face of the Sampdoria goal, with the backtracking Gastaldello powerless to prevent the goal.
Moments later, the final whistle sparked scenes of joy at the Stadio Olimpico, as Torino moved back into the Serie B driving seat.
