Struggling Premier League giants Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Inter’s Ricardo Alvarez and Milan’s Philippe Mexes after deciding that Napoli’s valuation of Edinson Cavani is impracticably expensive.

The North London club were rumored to be preparing a £30 million bid for the prolific Uruguayan in hopes of securing a January switch, but the striker’s £50 million buy out clause in his recent contract extension all but ensures that a move to the Gunners is an impossibility.

Boss Arsene Wenger has therefore turned his attention to more economically viable alternatives in Serie A, according to Italian media outlets.

French international Mexes has failed to have a positive impact in a Milan defense in disarray thus far following the departure of Thiago Silva over the summer, starting in just six of the Rossoneri’s first 12 league games.

Alvarez has made only 6 appearances in Serie A on the campaign, all from the bench, amassing just 146 minutes and tallying a single assist in the process whilst dealing with several niggling injuries. Arsenal were previously interested in the pacy Argentine prior to the 2011 season, but were beaten to his signature by current owners Inter.
