According to reports emerging in Italy today, Genoa have the upper hand over AC Milan in their attempts to sign Lazio’s Matuzalem.

Both clubs were keen on bringing the Brazilian away from the Olimpico in January with the player not being guaranteed an automatic first team spot under new boss Vladimir Petkovic in the capital.

Palermo have long been interested in the 32-year-old while the Rossoneri are understood to be keen on further strengthening their midfield.

However, the Grifoni looks to the likeliest destination for the former Shakhtar Donetsk man with Enrico Preziosi a big fan of his and he is eager to open negotiations with the Biancocelesti as soon as possible.

They certainly need to reinforce during the winter mercato with the club currently sitting bottom of the Serie A table, behind clubs who began the season with points penalties.

Matuzalem’s contract at Lazio expires in 2014 but they are willing to let him go as he no longer features in their plans.

He has made almost 80 appearances for the club in all competitions since arriving for over €5m in 2008 from Real Zaragoza.
