Liverpool have joined the race that is becoming ever more competitive to sign Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi.

That is a list that includes a host of Serie A sides including Roma, Fiorentina and Inter with AC Milan understood to have dropped their interest with the Rossoneri now being linked with Mario Balotelli.

The former Manchester United man has been out of action since October last year after twice picking up cruciate ligament injuries although the Spanish side are keen to offload him due to his high wages following their relegation last season.

The 25-year-old has not played in the peninsula despite starring for the Azzurri outwith a brief spell on loan with Parma in 2007 in which he greatly impressed, scoring nine times in 19 appearances.

Liverpool are desperate to sign a striker with fellow Azzurri star Fabio Borini having picked up a broken ankle that means Luis Suarez is the only senior striker at the club at the moment.

They have also been strongly linked with a move for Schalke’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar although he too is also in Fiorentina’s radar.

The New Jersey-born attacker has scored 82 times in under 200 appearances in all competitions for the Yellow Submarine since joining five years ago.
