Juventus chief Giuseppe Marotta has laid talk of attracting a big name striker to Turin to rest, claiming the club simply cannot afford it.
Citing the current financial crisis attacking most business sectors in Italy, Marotta explained that all Italian clubs are experiencing difficulties acquiring and retaining marquee players.
Recent rumours have linked the Bianconeri with stars like Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, Manchester United’s Robin van Persie, and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, but Marotta told Corriere dello Sport, “They are great names, but it is almost a utopian way to think.”
“I don’t speak only for Juventus, but for all the Italian teams,” he continued, “We are in a time of great decline, so I think it’s really difficult to imagine that a team may invest more than €30 million for a player of this quality.”
Although the only persistent idea for how to upgrade the current Italian title-holding squad has been to purchase a superstar striker, Juventus is still the second-highest scoring club in the league so far this season. They are currently in first place by one point following their first loss after 49 undefeated matches last weekend.
Marotta’s admission may be the end of the ongoing big name transfer talks surrounding Juventus’ market campaign this coming January.
