Former Palermo coach Gian Piero Gasperini was disappointed he failed to lead the club out of the bottom of the standings, but understands that the results never materialized.

The 55-year-old arrived in September, but with only six wins in eighteen matches and Palermo languishing at the bottom of the standings he understands why he got the sack.

“I had a great opportunity after having played for Palermo and I returned as coach,” he told the Giornale di Sicilia.

“It was a club that was familiar to me and with lots of potential. I am angry, disappointed and bitter.”

“It was a chance to get ahead through my work,” he explained when asked about why he started so many new players on Sunday.

“Boselli is the new striker. Brienza left so I picked Fabbrini, who is talented and ready for Italian football. Morganella was not feeling well so I picked Nelson. Maybe I forced Faurlin’s presence. It is upsetting not being able to continue now that the squad is more complete.”

“Unfortunately the results never arrived after the derby. Victories that became draws and draws that became defeats in the final minutes. We got less than we deserved many times but the results make the difference.”

“Zamparini held out on me longer than he did in other situations. My personal problems did not help me and the last bit of time has been very difficult, in every way.”
