AC Milan midfielder Bryan Cristante has been awarded the Golden Boy honour of being the best player at this year’s Viareggio Cup tournament.

The 17-year-old starred throughout the tournament and turned in a series of majestic performances that caught the eye of the nine journalists who vote for this award.

He told La Domenica Sportiva: “This is a great satisfaction for me although I would have preferred to have won the tournament.

“Anderlecht are a good team but maybe if we had scored in the first half then things would have been different but we had a good game at the end of a major tournament and gave everything to win it but it was not to be.”

Adriano Galliani also commented on his performances afterwards, saying that he has now really caught the eye: “Cristante will definitely be a part of the first team next season and he deserves it.”

There is also talk of  a new contract in the offing for the youngster following his impressive displays.

He is the fifth recipient of this award following victories for Sampdoria’s Guido Marilungo in 2009, Ciro Immobile in 2010 with Juventus, Inter’s 2011 win through Simone Dell’Agnello and Juventus’ Leaonardo Spinazzola last year.

Teammate Simone Ganz came second in the voting.
