Serie B have introduced a salary cap for new contracts signed after July according to league president Andrea Abodi.

The decision was unanimously approved by the league, along with restricting the number of players on each squad.

Salaries will no longer exceed €300,000 a season, with the fixed portion being capped at €150,000 and variable salary (bonuses) being capped at €150,000.

The decision will allow Serie B clubs to save almost 25% of their costs as a quarter of the current contracts in the league are greater than the new salary cap.

Squad sizes have also been capped at a maximum of 22 players over the age of 21 starting next season. This number will further be reduced to 20 players in 2014/15, with the number of under 21 players being unlimited.

“These decisions will allow us to take steps forward in order to protect the financial assets of our clubs,” Abodi stated after the meeting.

He also reaffirmed his intention of bringing down the size of the Serie B to 20 squads.

“Everyone must take responsibility, but unfortunately we aren’t able to sit down with the other leagues to talk about this. I hope to do that as soon as possible, starting with the federal council on April 5.”
