Diego Milito - InterInter forward Diego Milito has marked his birthday by commenting on aspects of his illustrious career, including why he prefers playing in Serie A to La Liga, the reason Juventus rival Giorgio Chiellini has been his most difficult opponent and his admiration for international compatriot Lionel Messi.

Despite a knee injury suffered against CFR Cluj cutting the Argentine’s season short in February, the striker still managed an admirable return of nine goals and five assists in his 26 appearances last term.

Commenting in an interview with UEFA, the now 34-year-old offered his opinion on several matters; not least his partiality for the Italian game over the Spanish.

“Football in Spain and Italy is different,” he said. “The Italian one is much more similar to the soccer that is played in Argentina in terms of passion.

“In Spain there is more calm and more respect. I have lived a good period in Spain, but I identify more with Italian football.”

Drawing comparisons between the tactical style in Italy and the most difficult opponent he has faced, the striker opted for Juventus’ Chiellini over his younger brother, former Independiente and Barcelona defender Gabriel, whom he faced while playing in Spain with Real Zaragoza and in his homeland with Racing Club, his first senior team.

“In Italy, the priority is the tactic – the defenders are hard, heavy and difficult to deal with and you need to be physically prepared to withstand the duels,” he said.

“I played against many great defenders. I think my brother was one of my toughest opponents because we know each other very well. Here in Italy, I say Chiellini. He is a fierce, combative defender and it’s hard to overcome him.”

When asked for his opinion on the current leading player in his position, Milito showed no hesitation in selecting fellow Argentine Messi.

“Today it is without a doubt Messi,” he insisted. “I know what he is capable of – he can decide a game alone at any time and is a truly remarkable player.”

“Playing with him every weekend must be fantastic.”
