Coppa Italia 2014The third round of the Coppa Italia provided a host of shocks over the weekend as Cagliari, Torino and Livorno all tumbled to lower league opposition.

Perhaps the biggest shock came at the Stadio Alberto Picco where Serie B side Spezia were taking on Ligurian rivals Genoa for a place in the fourth round of the competition.

It looked as if the Grifone would make light work of their neighbours after Alberto Gilardino put them ahead, but Marco Sansovini struck before half time to level the game. Osariemen Ebagua then put Spezia ahead with just nine minutes remaining, but Francesco Lodi converted a penalty in the final minute of added time to force extra time.

Lodi again was the protagonist, as his long range effort smacked the post in the additional period, but the game eventually went to penalties which Spezia won 5-4, with Lodi having his spot kick saved by Nicola Leali.

Torino also found themselves on the cutting room floor after Pescara won 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

Riccardo Maniero put the Delfini ahead, before Ciro Immobile equalised against his old club, but Antonino Ragusa scored just before the hour mark to give the relegated club a deserved win.

Cagliari were another side which saw a Coppa Italia run slip through their grasp as Frosinone defeated the Isolani 2-1 after extra time.

In a close game, the Canarini went ahead through Daniel Ciofani on 26 minutes, but less then ten minutes later Mauricio Pinilla had the game level. But the game took a turn against the Sardinians when Daniele Dessena was sent off just before the break.

Then in the final moments of extra time Davis Curiale netted to send the Serie B side into the next round.

At the Stadio Armando Picchi, Siena overcame Livorno 1-0 thanks to a 44th minute Angelo strike.

However, some Serie A sides did make it through to the fourth round with Hellas Verona advancing at the expense of Palermo, thanks to a Luca Toni header just before half time. New Rosanero coach Gennaro Gattuso was sent to the stands in the match, while Armin Bacinovic as also given his marching orders late in the game.

Parma made light work of Lecce, defeating the Salentini 4-0 at the Stadio Tardini with summer signing getting his fist goal for the club from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile Chievo defeated Empoli 2-0, and Sampdoria usurped Benevento by the same scoreline thanks to a Manolo Gabbiadini brace. Sassuolo also overcame Novara 3-1 after extra time and Bologna came out 1-0- winners against Brescia.

In games featuring lower league sides Trapani were 1-0 victors over Padova, Reggina beat Crotone, and Avellino overcame Cesean by the same scoreline. While Varese drew 1-1 with Juve Stabia before defeating Le Vespe the 4-3 on penalties.
