Del Piero praises young Napoli forward
The 22-year-old Neapolitan scored his first international goal for the senior side against Argentina last week, a goal which Del Piero himself would have been proud of, and ‘Pinturicchio’ sees a bright future ahead for the young star.
“Insigne scores goals like I used to? He is a talent and it’s really thanks to talents like him, which we have in Italy, that Italian football is sure to return to the levels of old and close the gap with Germany, England and Spain,” he told Eurosport.
The Juventus legend was part of a golden generation of Italian talent which graced Serie A around the turn of the century, and thinks the only way to raise new crops of players of a similar calibre is to focus more on youth.
“I believe it’s difficult for another generation to come through like the one myself, [Francesco] Totti, [Alessandro] Nesta, [Fabio] Cannavaro, and the others were a part of, but working well within the youth sectors, you can grow.”
Insigne scored five goals for the Partenopei during the 2012/13 season, while making 16 appearances as a starter and and a further 21 coming on off the bench.
