Mazzarri: I want Inter to play at a faster pace
Rodrigo Palacio netted a brace and Jonathan and Andrea Ranocchia both scored against the Serie B team in a performance which helped to alleviate some of the criticism directed at Inter, who have had an unimpressive pre-season.
“Today we saw 60 per cent of how we can perform, although in the end we created a lot and remained focused,” Mazzarri told Inter Channel.
“In these August matches you can take nothing for granted – yesterday four out of five Serie A teams were eliminated [from the Coppa Italia].
“Looking at the result now it all seems easy, but that’s not the way it went. Cittadella were well organised and closed down space. When the time is right I want to see faster play from us.”
Inter’s defence and team cohesion has been criticised after Chelsea beat them 2-0 in pre-season, followed by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Valencia.
“I was interested in not conceding any goals and improving the defence,” the former Napoli tactician said.
“We played as a team: there was rarely any selfish play. This is a young team with room for improvement. We are on the right track but we need to do a lot more.”
Mateo Kovacic, who has missed much of Inter’s pre-season preparation due to injury, came off the bench to replace Fredy Guarin in Sunday’s game, and Mazzarri was content with the Croatian midfielder’s performance.
“I’m happy to have rediscovered Kovacic. He played well, even if he is not in the best condition.”
