Napoli looking to continue growing despite tough draw says Bigon
Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon has conceded that the club are in a tough group in this year’s Champions League and will use the opportunity to continue building upon their European credentials.
The Neapolitans were drawn in Group F alongside last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund, perennial Champions League participants Arsenal, and former European Cup winners Marseille, and Bigon admitted it would be tough going for Napoli.
“In the past few years we have gained a great amount of credibility in the international sphere, but we are not forgetting that we were still in Pot 4 of the draw as seen by our long absence from European competition,” Bigon said.
“This year we will will have to establish ourselves at a higher level, the Champions League is the most beautiful tournament in the world because all the teams are very strong.”
Napoli last qualified for the Champions League two seasons ago when they reached the first knockout stage only to lose to eventual winners Chelsea in extra-time.
Last season Napoli played in the Europa League only to bow out in the round of 32 to Viktoria Plzen 5-0 on aggregate.
