PSV striker: AC Milan were better all round
Kevin-Prince Boateng added to his goal on 9 minutes with a second-half strike after Mario Balotelli had doubled Milan’s lead, sending them through to the Champions League group stages with a 4-1 aggregate win.
“At the beginning of the second half we had a great chance to make it 1-1, and shortly afterwards it was they who made it 2-0,” Toivonen told Uefa.com.
“To get two goals back at the San Siro is very hard. [Christian] Abbiati is a great goalkeeper, but I think Milan were better all round.
“They made more concrete chances in attack and I believe this made the difference,” the 27-year-old Swede added.
“We are a young team with not much experience. Playing against Milan is formative for us, but we really wanted to qualify.
“We didn’t succeed and now we have to look forwards and play in the Europa League.”
