Calcio Coaching: A session with Delio Rossi

Current Sampdoria tactician Delio Rossi, has been running football sides since the early 1990’s.

A man of undoubted experience, he has been at the helm of not only the Blucerchiati, but also clubs such as Lazio, Palermo and Fiorentina.

Here we bring you a sample of one of the Italy’s most fiery coach’s training sessions.

delio rossi drill 1Warm Up – 25 minutes

15 minutes – the squad will perform some simple jogging and include dynamic stretching techniques to increase the body
temperature and prepare it for the session ahead

10 minutes – in pairs, players will start to use a ball by practicing technical elements to include passing, juggling,
headers, volleys etc

Drill 1 – Six minute aerobic exercise

Players are asked to run 22 metre lengths.

Players work for 20 seconds and rest for 20 seconds.

Drill 2 – Tactical scheme

One wide player passes ball to midfielder who looks to make a long pass for the striker who has made a run in between two mannequins acting as defenders.

The coach insisted on the quality not only of the pass but in the way the midfielder received the pass and controlled it in order to make space for himself to send an accurate ball.

Also important was the timing of the forward’s run to take the ball confidently and shoot at goal.

Drill 3 – Small sided games

20 players are split into four teams.  While two teams play the others will rest.

Game One
Maximum three touches, ball must be played along ground, offside applied, no corners and thrown ins played in with feet.

Game Two
Two touches, ball can go over head height, no corners, offside applied and thrown ins taken normally.

Four defenders and a defensive midfielder work against seven attackers.

Firstly, they must deal with long balls played from the half way line for the forwards.

Subsequently, the offensive seven are free to attack as they wish though two midfielders can only move horizontally across the pitch.

Drill 5 – Practice matchdelio rossi practice match

A game of 10 vs 9 with no restrictions

Cool Down

Simple jogging and stretching routines for all players.
