Gilardino angry with himself after Bulgaria victory
He struck with a header in what was his 19th goal for his country but admits being upset with himself at not putting the game beyond doubt by scoring another but his goal was a poignant moment for him he revealed.
“I am a little angry as I could have scored a second and matched Paolo Rossi’s tally [for Italy of 20 goals] and I should have been sharper and gone around the goalkeeper to score,” said the Genoa striker afterwards.
“It was nice to play the violin again [his celebration] and I played it for myself, that goal was for me. I never gave up and always continued working and at the age of 31 I want to keep improving and doing well for my country.
“That is the important thing, not what people write in the papers.”
He also was impressed with how Bulgaria performed on the night and thanked Gigi Buffon for some crucial saves that ensured the victory for Italy.
‘Gila’ continued: “If you win games like this, it shows you have a solid group with great character and we knew Bulgaria would be tough and Gigi did have to save us on more than one occasion and everyone gave their all and it was important to suffer during the game and still come out with the win.”
