Lazio striker ties Germany top scoring record
The 35-year-old scored goal number 68 for his country in their 3-0 World Cup qualifier win over Austria on Friday, which puts him equal with legendary striker Gerd Muller for most international goals scored for Germany, though Muller set the record in only 62 appearances compared to Klose’s 129.
Klose spoke to the Corriere dello Sport about his achievement and gave thanks to those who helped him score, including opposing defenders.
“Thomas Muller is right when he says 50 per cent of this goal was down to him, as he put in a great assist,” said the Lazio man.
“Another 25 per cent of the credit goes to the Austrian defender who deflected it on to me. I will take the remaining 25 per cent.
“As for Gerd Muller, he was stronger than me. He only needed half my caps to notch up 68 goals.”
