Martin Skrtel - LiverpoolNapoli are reportedly going to try to once again sign Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel in January.

During the summer Partenopei coach Rafa Benitez was persistently linked to a reunion with the 28-year-old Slovakian international who he brought to Merseyside in 2007, but the move never materialised.

Via his official blog, SportItalia‘s Alfredo Pedulla explalined that despite the player not having signed for the Stadio San Paolo outfit, he could still make the switch in the near future.

“Napoli decided not to take the defender at the last minute, but they will try again in January,” Pedulla wrote.

“If he could have chosen, [coach] Rafa Benitez would have brought his former pupil at Liverpool to the San Paolo.

“There were never any serious negotiations, at most a couple of friendly phone calls between the player and the coach.

“There is a half-promise that they will get back in touch in the next few weeks with the hope that something can happen in January, when Napoli will probably be searching more insistently for a defender.

“And [Martin] Skrtel could be their main objective.”

Skrtel moved to Anfield in 2007 from Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg, and has managed nine goals in 207 appearances thus far for the Reds.

Skrtel does not want to leave Liverpool, and he has a long contract. Raffa needs to be careful as he’s likely to be done for tapping up.
