The 37-year-old had a long career in , having played for both and before moving to the Impact in 2012.

According to Calciomercato.com, the side put together a video package to honour the veteran’s career before their last home game of the regular season against the on Saturday, which they won 2-1.

, fellow Italian and a teammate of Nesta’s at the Canadian side, spoke about the defender and praised him for his talent and success.

“Alessandro is one of the best defenders in the world,” said the former striker, who’s 37-years-old as well.

“He’s a champion and a true friend. I’m proud to have played by his side.

“We’re sad that he’s retiring, but I think he’ll continue to work in the world of football.”

Nesta made 78 appearances for the Italian national team and was part of the squad that won the in 2006.
