Inter captain Javier Zanetti has revealed his excitement in preparing to return to the pitch after suffering an Achilles tendon injury this past April.

The 40-year-old was expected to retire after gaining his injury last season, but he’s remained determined to continue playing and is satisfied with the improved Nerazzurri side he’ll be returning to, which has been positively transformed since the arrival of coach Walter Mazzarri.

Zanetti recently spoke about his recovery, as he’s expected to start playing again as soon as next month, and commented on the competition his team faces in their fight to redeem themselves from last season’s unflattering finish.

“I am feeling better now and think I’m in the final phase of my injury,” said the veteran defender.

“I hope to be back as soon as possible and be of use to the team. I can’t wait to get back on the field.

“I am not surprised [by the team’s success], as I already knew Mazzarri as an opponent. Napoli are doing well too. Rafa Benitez was not with us for long, but we knew he was a valid coach.

“What counts is that now we are on a new path. The first thing Inter have to think about is to be protagonists and fight for something important.

“There are many sides who will fight to the end for the Scudetto. Roma have great players and are a strong adversary. We’ll see what happens at the end, as it’s a very long season.”
