On Wednesday, a section of Genoa fans took to Twitter in an effort to convince Alberto Gilardino to remain at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris for the foreseeable future.

According to several reports, the striker is on the verge of a move to MLS side Toronto FC and fans of the Rossoblu have set up this novel campaign in a last-ditch attempt to keep hold of their top scorer.

Revealed by Il Secolo XIX, Genoa fans have been using the hashtag #AlbertoGilardino and a series of tweets have already been posted on the site in a uniquely 21st-Century phenomenon.

After scoring seven goals in 16 Serie A appearances so far this season, it is easy to see why the fans are so keen to keep hold of the attacker and, with a World Cup on the horizon, Gilardino will undoubtedly be looking to keep this run going.

A TFC fan doesn’t want one of Serie A’s top 20 all-time goalscorers at their club? You should just be be happy he’s even considering joining your team considering its history. To call him crap shows how little you know about what you’re talking about
