The third day of the 66th Viareggio Cup brought us a Genoa derby and many more exciting matches as the tournament wore on.
In a contested Genoan derby it was Sampdoria who came out on top, goals from Oneto, Corsini and Ciccone guaranteed a comfortable win while Genoa’s F.Todisco saw red with 15 minutes to go while the score remained 2-0. The result means Sampdoria top Group 5 with six points while Genoa wallow in third with three.
Parma made light work of Spezia, also defeating the side 3-0 thanks to goals from A.Cerri, F.Silipo and L.Roveli. A second consecutive win moves Parma to the top of Group 8 with six points while Spezia sit fourth without a single point earned from the tournament.
Empoli won out against Verona 3-1, goals from Santi and Frugoli establishing a two goal deficit that was halved by Verona’s Donsah on the hourmark before a second goal from Frugoli secured a 3-1 win. Empoli’s win mean that the entire of Group 7 are level on three points, but Verona still top the group on goal difference. Empoli sit third.
Lazio were shocked by Varese, who surprised the Roman club with a 2-1 win. The Biancocelesti fell behind to a goal from Varese’s Marku before equalising with a goal from Paterni. Cason gave Varese the lead 12 minutes into the second half which the side held onto to beat the Italian giants.
Elsewhere, L.I.A.C New York won a thriller 3-2 against PSV in a game where the American outfit took a 3-0 lead at half time before a reinvigorated PSV nearly pegged the East Coast side back. Saqui, Falanga and Konbola gave NY a seemingly unassailable lead before a goal from Van Der Moot gave PSV a hope but the Netherlands side coudn’t capitalise, only finding a second in the 5th minute of stoppage through G.Hiwat.
In other results, Rijeka beat Congo 5-3 thanks to a double from R.Brdar and a penalty that was coolly dispatched by Postonjski. Mrsic and Marcius completed the five goal rout while goals from Congo’s Ganvoula and late strikes from Okoumo and a penalty from Ngoma couldn’t rescue a result.
Finally, Pakhator beat Deportivo 10 thanks to a lone goal from Makhstaliev.
