Gianfranco Zola has played down reports that he is in line to become the next coach of Cagliari.

There is currently uncertainty surrounding the position of current Cagliari coach Diego Lopez who is still in the job despite speculation that he would be sacked on Tuesday.

“Me as the next coach of Cagliari? I am the last person that should be answering that question,” Zola told Radio Crc.

The Sardinians have won just once in their last nine games, losing five out of their last six, and the Italian would be available to replace Lopez after resigning as Watford manager last December.

“It is difficult but in football you can never say never,” said the Chelsea legend.

Zola ended his playing career with two years in Rossoblu, but also enjoyed a spell at Napoli, where he won the Scudetto in 1990.

The 47-year-old though refused to be drawn on whether he would one day be interested in a return to the Stadio San Paolo as coach.

“Me on the Napoli bench? I’m glad to see that Napoli is in good hands. It is with Benitez, but it was with Mazzarri too.”
