Sinisa Mihajlovic has proclaimed his Sampdoria side safe from relegation following their win against Sassuolo on Wednesday night.

The Blucerchiati had Stefano Okaka to thank as his lob midway through the second half guaranteed Samp the three points which moves them to up to ninth position in the Serie A table on 40 points.

“If I started the season in charge of Samp would we be in the Champions League? I don’t know,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“After today’s effort we are not under threat of relegation and that was out first goal, now we to set new ones in the coming days and the way we are playing we know we can hit them.

“The lads merited the win because they have trained well, and have played three games in a week. Also, I can guarantee the respect of those guys on the pitch and I know they will give 100 percent.

The Serbian tactician was then asked about overtaking city rivals Genoa, who are in 13th position, despite a 2-0 win over Lazio on Wednesday.

“We have other objectives, “ he continued, “Genoa are a very good team and we respect them.

“We will try and pick up as many points as possible and then at the end of the season we will do the math, but our goal is not to finish above them.”

Mihajlovic was then asked what has changed in recent weeks with his side’s upturn in form.

“We won all those games because we scored at least one more goal than the opposition,” he said.

“We always play to win and not to lose. I have instilled an offensive mindset and I am confident in this team.”
