Sassuolo central defender Francesco Acerbi has stated he is ready to make a dramatic comeback to action after going through chemotherapy, brought about by cancer.

The Italian 26-year-old had previously been diagnosed with testicular cancer in June 2013 after a medical revealed a tumour in his testicular region.

Acerbi underwent surgery and played in 13 games for his new club before a failed drug test in December. However the ban was overturned as it was revealed the high levels of hormone found in his system were produced by cancerous cells – meaning the cancer had returned.

Acerbi announced he is ready to return after chemotherapy, posting on his Facebook page: “I  am ready to come back, thank you to everyone for you’re support”.

The Sassuolo defender continued to train during his chemotherapy treatment and is raring to rejoin his teammates on the field.

“Now comes the good moment where I can win back everything I left behind. I am doing it for me and my family”.
