Buffon - ItalyJuventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has spoken about the current state of the Italy national side ahead of this summer’s World Cup and their objectives for the tournament.

Italy have been drawn in a difficult group including England, Uruguay and Costa Rica but the Azzurri captain remains optimistic about Italy’s chances during the tournament.

“Our goal is to get out of the group and into the second round, and with a bit of luck we will progress to the quarter finals,” the 36-year old told Sky Sport 24.

“Hypothetically, if we were to meet Brazil we may go out as we will be facing a side who are expected to win the tournament.

“Our objective is to go play and have no regrets.

“We do not have a minimum objective as you can never tell who you will meet on the journey, every player must wear the shirt with pride as it is an honor and pleasure to play for Italy.”

Buffon went on to discus the inclusion of Antonio Cassano in the preliminary World Cup squad, who has not featured for the Azzurri since 2012 and comments on the extension to coach Cesare Prandelli’s contract .

“Cassano is here because it feels right, he is serene and calm.

“If Antonio is selected it is because he deserves it.

“As for the renewal for Prandelli it is a signal of continuity and that is not often seen at a national level, it is the best way to reap the benefits for a further two years after a successful four.”

Buffon made 139 appearances for Italy since making his debut in 1997 and was a member of the 2006 World Cup winning squad.
