Former Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic is the top candidate to replace Sunderland manager Gus Poyet should the Tyneside club part ways with the Uruguayan.

The Black Cats currently sit at the bottom of the English Premier League only six matches remaining and with Gus Poyet’s job far from being safe, the English side could move for Petkovic even though he is set to take over the the Swiss national team after the World Cup this summer.

Tuttomercatoweb.com are reporting the English side have contacted the Swiss Football Federation to explore the possibility of hiring Petkovic to take over for Poyet for the remainder of the season.

Should the move for Petkovic not work out, former Shalke 04 boss Ralf Rangnick is another possible candidate.

Petkovic was sacked by Lazio in January after announcing he had signed a contract to take over the Swiss national team.
