After nearly four months out with injury, Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi has returned to training nearly a month ahead of schedule to boost his chances of making Italy’s World Cup squad, and a Coppa Italia final appearance for the Viola on May 3.

After further damage was sustained to knee ligaments he had suffered from twice before against Livorno earlier this season, the initial diagnosis was that a four or five month lay-off would rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.

However, Tuttomercatoweb have reported that the support and desire of teammates to have him join them on the pitch for the final weeks of Serie A, and the chance of a first trophy since 2001 for the Viola, have proved the perfect incentive for the striker during his recovery.

On Monday, the 27-year-old nearly completed a full training session in Florence and will be soon hoping to add to that with some playing minutes for the first team, although it is unlikely that he would start the final against Napoli.

Providing he can prove his fitness between now and when Cesare Prandelli must announce his 23-man squad for the World Cup there is a real chance he could still feature for the Azzurri this summer.
