Atalanta forward Marko Livaja has released a statement following his outburst at several La Dea fans on his personal Facebook page.

The Croatian striker entered a heated dispute with Atalanta fans over the social media site after several of them invited him to leave the Bergamo club which resulted in the 20-year-old calling the supporters “Italian bastards,” as well as other derogatory terms.

“I write these few lines to apologise to all those who were offended,” Livaja wrote.

“I lost my head against those who insulted my mother.”

The Atalanta forward accused some fans of using racist insults which lead to his outburst.

“They referred to me as a gypsy and also used more serious insults relating to my nationality,” he continued.

“I hope to not have more of these reactions, and hope any criticism of me is based on my performances on the pitch.”

He concluded his post in seasonal spirit, as he wrote: “I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Easter.”
