Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella has explained that the Viola allowed Luca Toni to leave the club last summer due to their depth in attack.

The two sides will meet in Verona on Sunday afternoon but Montella has revealed his admiration for the veteran.

Speaking at a press conference, the former Roma striker explained why Toni, who has scored 16 goals since the move, was allowed to leave the Gigliati.

“Toni has found a new dimension,” he stated.

“He has shown himself to be a professional, as he always was, but he is helped by playing every week which would have been impossible if we had Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi.”

Toni’s good performance this season have been helped by Romulo, who is on loan from the Viola, with the two sides looking to settle the Brazilian’s future before the summer.

“Prior to my arrival,” Montella continued, “I seemed to understand that Romulo was not highly rated. He has proved his value now.”
