Catania coach Maurizio Pellegrino applauded the spirit of his players after they triumphed at home against Sampdoria.

The Etnei defeated the Blucerchiati 2-1 and the Catania coach not only admired the way his players approached the game but he also has confidence in this team surviving relegation.

“Victory due to pride? I don’t know about that,” Pellegrino told Rai Sport. “We are neither moribund, nor are we in agony.

“In spite of the current difficulties, we won. There was a great will to conquer the three points.

“The players were very good at demonstrating how to be alive. We will honour until the end of the championship.”

This match was Pellegrino’s second match as Catania coach in Serie A after making his debut last week against AC Milan. He had a previous stint with the Etnei from 2001 to 2003.

Catania are still on the bottom of Serie A with 23 points and are five points adrift from safety.
