Newly appointed Cagliari boss Ivo Pulga has revealed that his team will try their hardest to win their match against Sassuolo on Saturday as they look to secure their place in Serie A for next season.

The 49-year-old, who previously led the Isolani for most of the 2012-13 season, was chosen as a replacement for Diego Lopez after the former coach’s recent sacking and admits he’s ready to help the club finish the season in the best way possible starting with their match against the Neroverdi at the Stadio Citta del Tricolore on Saturday.

Pulga spoke during his pre-match press conference on Friday about the game against Sassuolo and was adamant that Cagliari must play their best and fully achieve salvation before he can be satisfied.

“We want to close the discussion of salvation,” said the tactician, who also played as a midfielder for the Rossoblu 1985-91.

“It’s a match to take advantage of for points. We’ll go there and try to win.

“This team cannot just make calculations, if we enter the field with the intention of securing a draw, then we won’t get the result.

“However, if we instead enter the field with the mentality of trying to win, then everything is different.

“We need to earn three or four points as quickly as possible to be calm. I think this year the mission is to have 35-36 points, which is lower than usual.

“Let’s first earn our safety in the league and then we can take away some satisfaction.

“It will be very tough. Sassuolo has been able to get good results, they play good football.

“We will have to have the right spirit and remain short, compact, quick on the attack and try not to fall behind the opponent’s attack.

“Nene and [Mauricio] Pinilla absent? We will play with the same 11. Whoever will go on the field will have great motivation and I’m sure they will have a great performance.

“Regarding the formation, we will see. This team knows how to play with four in the midfield and the trident in attack.”
