Cagliari coach Ivo Pulga believes the Isolani’s 1-1 draw against Sassuolo on Saturday could prove crucial in their bid to avoid relegation to Serie B.

The 49-year-old was brought back to the Rossoblu after Diego Lopez was sacked last weekend, and the new tactician was pleased to see his side put on a good performance after their recent struggles.

“It is an important point against a direct rival,” Pulga told Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“I want to highlight the second half performance of my team as they did everything they could to leave their bad form behind them.

“We were coming off of bad results and the players did a great job and showed a lot of heart to overcome it.

“We conceded the goal when we had a player on the ground and at that point we had been suffering on the flanks a bit.

“Then we switched to a four man defence and we conceded less by taking advantage of [Victor] Ibarbo’s runs.

“Our chances of survival? In my opinion, looking at last season, the teams that had to survive were already at 30 points. This year they are further behind so I think 35 or 36 points could mean safety.”
