Roma have reportedly made contact with the agent of Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen to discuss a possible transfer.

The Giallorossi are thought to have been interested in the Belgian international for some time and see him as an alternative to their other defensive target Davide Astori who has been offered a new contract with Cagliari.

According to Roman newspaper Il Messaggero, Roma’s sporting director Walter Sabatini has met at least two times in a Florence hotel with Vertonghen’s agent to try and pave the way for a move to the Stadio Olimpico for the former Ajax man.

Roma were interested in the 26-year-old when he was at Ajax but ultimately he opted to join Spurs in 2012 yet Sabatini has not given up on signing the cultured defender and is hoping the Lupi’s place in the 2014-15 Champions League may be enough to lure him to the Italian capital.

Vertonghen has made 23 appearances for the White Hart Lane club during the 2013-14 Premier League season.
