Inter president Erick Thohir believes important Serie A matches, including the Milan derby, should one day be played outside the peninsula in an attempt to grow the Italian game internationally.

The Indonesian businessman spoke to reporters at a ceremony of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore where Thohir was awarded the best Asian investor in Italy on Wednesday.

“Major League Baseball plays some of its games in Australia and the NBA plays in London. Why not have Inter-Milan play in Singapore?” the Inter president stated.

There is a precedent in Italy to play matches outside the country. Since its inception in 1988 the Supercoppa Italia has marked the unofficial start of the Serie A campaign and been played outside the country a total of six times including Beijing which has hosted three of the last five contests.

“Inter are among the 15 most important world brands in football and because we are a part of Serie A we should penetrate the Asian market together,” Thohir confirmed.
