Chievo Club Focus: Miracle on Piazzale Olimpia

Chievo are just one point away from the drop, it’s a scary situation that I’m sure coach Eugenio Corini doesn’t want to be in. Reality is, the Flying Donkey’s need to win both their remaining games, against Cagliari and Inter respectively, if they want to stay in Serie A next season.

The Torino match last Sunday was a massive positive on the performance side of things and Chievo were unfortunate to see Gennaro Sardo score into his own goal to secure the Granata’s victory.

Corini saw his team give everything against a side fighting for a Europa League spot, they even managed to prevent Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci from scoring.

Mathematically, president Luca Campedelli’s club isn’t safe and could well have to say farewell to Serie A, after six years in top flight Italian football. The Flying Donkeys were relegated in the 2006/2007 campaign in a very similar situation to what they see themselves in now. There were five teams who were all battling it out at the bottom, with the Gialloblu unable to survive.

They soon bounced back after winning Serie B and have spent another six seasons in Serie A, but could return again to the Italian second tier after a series of missed opportunities and careless performances.

There’s no plan now, Corini needs a miracle to save his team from being sucked into the bottom three and relegated. Sassuolo saw themselves getting a vital win against Fiorentina that pushed them one point ahead of the Gialloblu and they could extend that lead at home to Genoa this weekend.

Nevertheless, it’s Catania and Bologna the Flying Donkeys need to fear the most. The Elefanti won against second place Roma in a 4-1 battle that will help them in their survival situation, whilst Davide Ballardini’s men drew 0-0 to Genoa. Both now meet this weekend at the Stadio Dall’Ara .

Chievo will be watching in anticipation to see the outcome of this game, if either side win the Gialloblu must secure victory in their remaining games. If Bologna take three points from Maurizio Pellegrino’s side, and Corini loses away to Cagliari, it could be curtains for the former Torino and Palermo player who will have to win at home to Inter and rely on other results.

Keeping the faith…

It’s difficult to find some kind of hope or belief that Chievo will survive. I know there are still two games left and they are one point clear of the relegation zone . Howeverm it’s other results that the Flying Donkeys will be hoping go their way this weekend and the next.

I’ve come to enjoy having the Flying Donkey’s in Serie A, they’re a team that always offer excitement and cause upsets amongst the big sides in Italy. The title has been won, but the battle for survival isn’t.

Forza Chievo!!!!!
