For a time it looked like they were set to play the role of the villain in Sassuolo’s bid for survival and although they succumbed to two late goals, Genoa boss Gian Piero Gasperini was content with his side’s display.

Twice they battled back after going behind before Nicola Sansone and Antonio Floro Flores struck in the closing stages to assure their team’s Serie A survival.

The former Inter boss spoke to Rai Sport afterwards and said: “In the last minutes, we just encountered several difficulties through some deflections and unfortunate moments but the players did their best.

“They tried until the end and gave so much. It is a shame about the final minutes but I think that we played a good game.”

On the whole, Gasperini is pleased with how the Grifoni, who have flirted with the drop in previous seasons, have acquitted themselves this season.

“We have brought some excellent results in the league and we are sorry about these results in the league.”
