While center back Mehdi Benatia remains a Roma player, the club are developing a backup plan in case he leaves with Southampton’s Dejan Lovren topping their list.

Benatia is believed to be willing to leave the Giallorossi for Manchester City or Barcelona after just one season in the capital.

The Sun has reported that the club have targeted Lovren as a replacement should the Moroccan leave in the summer.

The 27 year old Benatia arrived last summer from Udinese for 13.7 million.

He made 37 appearances for the Giallorossi in all competitions, scoring five goals.

The 24 year old from Croatia, Lovren arrived last summer from Olympique Lyon in France for €10.2m.

He made 31 appearances in the Premier League for the club, scoring two goals and adding one  assist.
