Serie AThe Italian football federation, the FIGC, has today announced the end of co-ownership contracts.

The peninsula is the only country in Europe to use the system whereby two clubs can effectively ‘own’  half a player’s contract.

In an unprecedented move, which could include other possible reforms as the Italian football authorities look at improving the overall Serie A product, any current co-ownership contracts can be renewed for a further year after which a decision must be made as to who the player ultimately signs for.

But, from the new transfer window, no more such deals will be allowed, as Italy’s premier division falls in line with the rest of its European counterparts.

Federation president, Giancarlo Abete, has scheduled a top level meeting for 27th May, where further discussions will take place regarding the future structure of Serie A and Serie B.
